Product Description

L-Homoserine

L-Homoserine is a variant of serine with an additional carbon on its side chain. L-Homoserine is a non-proteinogenic amino acid that is important in the biosynthesis of methionine, an essential amino acid in many organisms including humans. L-Homoserine can be produced by a variety of bacteria, fungi, and plants through various metabolic pathways.

Application of L-Homoserine

L-Homoserine has been used as an internal standard for neurotransmitter analysis and amino acids quantification.

• In bacteria, L-homoserine is converted to O-acetyl-L-homoserine, which is then further converted to homocysteine in a series of steps involving enzymes such as acetyltransferase and synthase. Homocysteine is then converted to methionine through a process that requires the cofactor vitamin B12.

• In plants, L-homoserine is synthesized through the aspartate pathway, which involves a series of enzymatic reactions that convert aspartate to threonine and then to L-homoserine. This pathway is also important in the biosynthesis of other essential amino acids such as lysine and isoleucine.

• L-Homoserine has also been found to have potential applications in the production of various chemicals and pharmaceuticals. For example, it can be used as a precursor for the production of the drug gabapentin, which is used to treat epilepsy and neuropathic pain.

Biochem Actions of L-Homoserine

L-Homoserine is synthesized by deoxidation process, catalysed by homoserine dehydrogenase. This is one of the steps in the synthesis of L-threonine. The carbon flux in in bacteria such as E. coli is maintained by this reaction.

L-Homoserine is used in the biosynthesis of methionine, threonine and isoleucine.
